October 6th, 2018 marked the 11th Cayman Island Breast Cancer Foundation Annual Gala Dinner. This major annual fundraiser for BCF is paramount to maintaining the reserves required to provide not only financial assistance to all those individuals/ organizations desperately needing that assistance but also to fund Wellness Programs and so much more. CTMH Doctors Hospital once again strongly supports BCF and engaged as a main sponsor for the event. It was a night to remember as Breast Cancer survivor Shannen Doherty – An accomplished actress with an extensive list of credentials sparked a widespread conversation to inspire others fighting cancer. The fundraiser raised over $300,000 in live and silent auctions all to support those in need. The charitable donations, loving support, and wholehearted commitment to the Cayman Islands Breast Cancer Foundation made it an unforgettable evening.

In collaboration with the Breast Cancer Foundation, we at CTMH Doctors Hospital are striving to provide even more relief to our cancer patients. BCF has donated the new cold cap product that helps prevent hair loss due to cancer treatments and a brand-new freezer for the caps themselves. The Breast Cancer Foundation with CTMH Doctors Hospital have worked together in training and the implementation of this new therapy.

With this generous donation, we at CTMH Doctors Hospital are able to treat cancer patients while preserving their hair. It is a common thought that resonates throughout the world that a person’s hair is a part of their beauty; we would love to be able to preserve a person’s confidence of feeling beautiful all the way through their journey of chemotherapy treatments.

The theory behind scalp hypothermia is that the cooling tightens up or constricts blood vessels in the scalp. This constriction is thought to reduce the amount of chemo that reaches the cells of the hair follicles. The cold also decreases the activity of the hair follicles and makes them less attractive to chemo, which targets rapidly dividing cells. This could reduce the effect of chemo on the follicle cells and, as a result, prevent or reduce hair loss from the scalp.

Our visiting oncologist Dr. Dwight Lowe educates our patients about the cold cap therapy and makes it clear that is it not always a 100% guarantee that the hair will remain. Mrs. Janette Fitzgerald and Ms. Lydia Forbes from the Breast Cancer Foundation and support group further educate the patients about techniques such as but not limited to; using a mild shampoo to wash hair, avoid harsh chemicals and using a wide tooth comb to detangle hair.

In addition, The GeniusTM 3D MammographyTM exam is available on island ONLY at CTMH Doctors Hospital. Since 2012, CTMH Doctors Hospital Imaging was the first in the Caribbean to provide 3D scanning.

About The Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF)

The Breast Cancer Foundation was established in September 2009 by its directors Kim Lund, James Bovell, and John Broadbent. The Foundation is a charitable organization registered with the Cayman Islands Government. The Foundation was created to provide financial support to several local charities working in the field of breast cancer education and providing aid for treatment costs. Some of these benefiting charities include the Cayman Islands Cancer Society and The Lions Club of Tropical Gardens. These organizations work diligently in the awareness, prevention and the treatment of breast cancer.  Since its inception, the Foundation has expanded its work with a Wellness Program to directly helping Breast Cancer patients from when they are diagnosed, through their treatments and beyond.  The Foundation also sponsors training and equipment for assisting the medical professionals here in Cayman to better treat breast cancer patients.
